A good & enjoyable new album here from O'Brien, who has a knack for combining elements of old-time, folk, Bluegrass and Celtic music into a distinctive and successful style. The tracks range from his solo efforts on A FEW MORE YEARS (fiddle & vocal) and BUFFALO SKINNERS (guitar & vocal) to a full Bluegrass sound on LOOK DOWN THAT LONESOME ROAD (with Jerry Douglas, Dan Tyminski, Dennis Crouch and Charlie Cushman). Other cuts feature Stuart Duncan on fiddle, Chris Thile (mandolin), Dirk Powell and Casey Driessen (fiddle). It's a solid album, with a good amount of variety: especially nice are cuts of PRETTY FAIR MAID IN THE GARDEN, EARLY MORNING RAIN and FAIR FLOWERS OF THE VALLEY.

Staff Review:
"Tim O'Brien struck gold when he recorded Fiddler's Green, which was released in 2005. Perhaps not from a sales perspective (this is "folk" music, after all...) but certainly in creating a uniquely personal album that is captivating from start to finish and is always refreshing to revisit. In fact, if someone asked me to pick the ten albums I would bring if I was stranded on a desert island (one that was somehow furnished with electricity and a compatible stereo system), Fiddler's Green would absolutely be an essential part of my desert island music library.

This album has everything and all of it in the best possible way. There is a wonderful variety of material ranging from rollicking bluegrass band numbers to Celtic-flavored instrumentals to an archaic ballad with self-accompaniment from a solo fiddle - all of it highlighting Tim O'Brien's signature musical voice, both vocally and on the many instruments that he commands. There is an impressive roster of guest musicians including Stuart Duncan, Jerry Douglas, Chris Thile, Edgar Meyer, John Doyle, Casey Driessen, and others who help bring Tim's musical vision to life on this album. In addition to his singular talents as a singer and multi-instrumentalist, Tim O'Brien's genius lies in his tasteful arrangements and melding of styles and instrumentation. Each song is given all that it needs and nothing more, creating a sublime balance of energy, character, and subtlety. Elments of folk, bluegrass, Irish, and traditional American music are blended seamlessly and with a variety of instrumentation to form a collection of songs and tunes that feel as though they have always belonged together. Most importantly, it all sounds like Tim O'Brien.

This is an album that I will always keep on hand and one that, for better or for worse, I will always sing along with on every track. I encourage anyone who has not heard Fiddler's Green to go ahead and add it to their collection - it is simply one of the most well-rounded acoustic albums that I have ever heard." - Andrew
